Junior League Helps Holy Savior with New Library
At the corner of 15th street, just west of Oliver, is a small elementary school where I grew up. Back then it was Carter Elementary, and I remember walking to school every day from our house on Broadview, which was about a handful of blocks further west. That was a long time ago. Since then it has changed hands and now houses Holy Savior Catholic Academy. The student capacity is 250, which hasn’t changed much since I was there. It’s a warm, friendly neighborhood school that serves the area.
On November 20th at 7 p.m., Junior League of Wichita will host an open house at Holy Savior Catholic Academy to celebrate their new library. The focus of this first event will be to share the value of reading with the parents of Holy Savior elementary students. Cynthia Berner Harris, from the Wichita Public Library, will speak with the parents and do a reading for the children.
The $45,811 donation to fund this library was raised through the Junior League of Wichita Holiday Galleria. When volunteers began the project they were shocked at the condition of the library, which was inventoried in just 45 minutes. Many of the books dated back to the early 1900s. The school library now has new books, computers, a white board, other technology and furniture which will be shown and demonstrated the night of the open house.
Holy Savior Catholic Academy’s mission is to make the Catholic Church present to the children in northeast Wichita, a predominantly African-American community. The school reaches out to students of all ethnic origins, and faiths; as many as 60 percent are non-Catholic. Located at 4640 E. 15th Holy Savior provides education for 200 students who live in the poorest part of the city. For more information on how you can help, contact Delia Barnett, Principal at (316) 684-2141.
