DECISION 2008

CANDIDATE PROFILES

October brings us one month closer to the historic 2008 Presidential election on Tuesday, November 4. Throughout this month, you will hear numerous commercials, tireless media opinions, endless poll data, and spirited debates.

Over the past three months, this series of political articles was designed to educate you on the process and provide you information to help you make informed decisions. Last month, I discussed the “Changing Role of Women” -- I guess I should have waited a few weeks for Sarah Palin to arrive on the scene!

This Presidential election is truly one for the history books. Below you’ll find a snapshot of the Presidential candidates with some information about their backgrounds.

Sarah Palin

Mayor of Wasilla, R , 1996 - 2002

Born: 02.11.64.

Obviously, there are more candidates on the ticket than McCainMPalin and ObamaMBiden. In November, you will also be voting on the following offices: One of your U.S. Senators, your U.S. Representative, your state senator and state house member, the state board of education, two Kansas Supreme Court Justices, four Kansas Court of Appeals Judges, District Court and Magistrate Judges, the district attorney, two of your Sedgwick County Commissioners, the Sedgwick County Sheriff and other county elected offices.

Sometimes it’s difficult to find adequate and unbiased information about candidates, especially judges. In 2006, the Kansas Legislature formed the Kansas Commission on Judicial Performance. The Commission conducts evaluations of all the state court trial and appellate judges, and publicly recommends that judges subject to retention elections either “be retained“ or “not be retained“ in order to help voters make informed decisions. Kansas law provides that only evaluations of appointed, not elected, justices and judges are to be disclosed to the public. You will find information about the Kansas Supreme Court and Court of Appeals judges at www.kansasjudicialperformance.org. In Sedgwick County, the district judges and district magistrate judges are elected not appointed, therefore no evaluations are available for review.

For information about your state senator or house member and those running for the Sedgwick County Commission, visit the Election 2008 section of www.kansas.com. There you will find an interactive voter guide for the Wichita metro area and more information about candidate issues.

Take the time to review the platforms for each of the parties. The platform is the road map for the candidates. This Presidential election, no matter who wins, history will be made. Be a part of it!
