These days, we Wichitans are looking for a place to unwind with a fun, relaxing atmosphere that still exudes style and class but doesn’t break the bank. Oh, yea, and we want sports memorabilia decor. And a bar. And lots of flat screens. But don’t forget about the style thing; that’s important to us.

Louie’s Grill and Bar must have read our minds, because that’s exactly what you’ll find inside their new location at 21st and Webb. They opened their doors December 15th, 2008 and have seen a steady flow of business since then. Maybe that’s because they focus heavily on customer service, which is a breath of fresh air to say the least. Or perhaps it’s because you experience a hybrid atmosphere with their classy/sporty décor. It could also be because nothing on their menu costs more than $10. There are several reasons why Louie’s Grill and Bar is the new hot spot to grab a bite or a drink.

We welcome Louie’s from Oklahoma, where it already has locations in Edmond, Oklahoma City, Norman, and Tulsa. It’s in the same family as Red Rock Canyon Grill and owners were hoping it would have the same success as well. So far, so good, says manager Charlie Wells. Wells helped open Madrocks Sports Bar in Derby before taking a position at Red Rock Canyon Grill and most recently with Louie’s. He’s spent his fair share of time outside of Wichita, but has been back since 2001 and couldn’t be happier with where he’s at today.

“The people in Wichita are by far the best,” says Wells. “They’re extremely nice here, and accommodating!”

That acceptance could be why Wichita was the ideal location for their first expansion outside of Oklahoma. More specifically, the exact spot in the ever-growing northeast part of the city seemed a perfect fit as well. There’s a generous amount of traffic flowing through that intersection daily, not to mention all the businesses nearby which creates busy lunch and happy hours for Louie’s.

Chris Giggy, graphic designer and self proclaimed useless information guru at The Golf Warehouse, took to the restaurant immediately.

“It’s close to work, so it’s a great place to go for a drink and some good food. Plus, since I’m not a huge fan of sports, I like that it doesn’t shove the theme down your throat like a lot of places,” says Giggy.

Louie’s Grill and Bar is accommodating to everyone, including both smokers and non-smokers. Its separate smoking room features another bar and more flat screens so everyone can have a good time. Wells likes that they can cater to a large non-smoking crowd as well with their sizable dining room, complete with both tables and booths.

Even though many people are suffering a hit from the state of the economy, they still want to go out and have a good time. Louie’s has positioned itself as a place where people can go without cringing when the tab comes. Everything on the menu is $10 or under, making an affordable night out completely realistic. Recently introduced is a late night menu. After the grill shuts down for the evening some key dishes are still available, such as:

• Fried green beans (my personal favorite!)
• Queso
• Chicken tenders
• One topping pizza

Drink specials are also offered Monday through Friday, of course.

There are things to look forward to from Louie’s, including a Cinco de Mayo celebration in which Mexican beer will be available in buckets for only $15, and the opening of its spacious outdoor patio!

“We want people to have fun when they come here. It’s a great place to relax as well. We pride ourselves on the fact that we won’t sacrifice service for a cheaper deal,” says Wells. “You get the best of both worlds.”
